How Can We Help?

Question: How can we understand the mood and mentality of the spiritual master. We see in the case of Śrīla Prabhupāda in 1977 when he felt a little better, he wanted to go on Govardhana parikramā, and many of his disciples they did not want him to go, out of love for Śrīla Prabhupāda that he would not be able to bear the situation. And also we see in the case of Gaura Kiśora dāsa Bābājī he wanted his body to be dragged through the streets of Navadvīpa after his departure, but Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura did not want it. So how do we understand the mood and mentality of the spiritual master?

Jayapatākā Swami: We should understand that the spiritual master is a special recipient of Kṛṣṇa’s mercy and it is not proper to drag the body of the spiritual master with ropes. So Śrīla Prabhupāda wanted to preach, he was a preacher. But his doctor said that if he went on a bullock cart around Govardhana, he will not survive. So, some of his disciples could not bear to think that Śrīla Prabhupāda will leave and so, they requested Śrīla Prabhupāda that he should please not go. And Śrīla Prabhupāda said that he would go, he had the final say, but we were crying that he should not go. We were hoping that he would recover. So, one thing is the spiritual master’s consciousness, the other thing is the devotees’ consciousness.
