Introduction: Today we are continuing with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book, today’s chapter entitled is:

Phalaśruti: The Result of Hearing About the Liberation of Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.1

naumi taṁ gauracandraṁ yaḥ
kutarka-karkaśāśayam
sārvabhaumaṁ sarva-bhūmā
bhakti-bhūmānam ācarat

Translation: I offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord Gauracandra, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who converted the hardhearted Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, the reservoir of all bad logic, into a great devotee.

Jayapatākā Swami:  Hari bol!

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.281

kāśīmiśrera prabhupade śaraṇāgati :—

kāśī-miśra-ādi yata nīlācala-vāsī
śaraṇa la-ila sabe prabhu-pade āsi’

Translation: After this incident, all the inhabitants of Jagannātha Purī, headed by Kāśī Miśra, came to take shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.282

ataḥpara prabhura dākṣiṇātya-bhramaṇa :—

sei saba kathā āge kariba varṇana
sārvabhauma kare yaiche prabhura sevana

Translation: Later I shall describe how Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya always engaged in the service of the Lord.

Jayapatākā Swami:  So, as the Bhagavad-gītā says, “what a great man does common men follow” Śrīla Prabhupāda used this ideology in enthusing his PhD and qualified disciples to preach to the scientists and intelligentsia, so that they could be convinced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and many people would follow. Now Lord Caitanya first convinced Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, the topmost Paṇḍita and erudite scholar in Jagannātha Purī and as a result many people took shelter of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.283

yaiche paripāṭī kare bhikṣā-nirvāhana
vistāriyā āge tāhā kariba varṇana

Translation: I shall also describe in full detail how Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya perfectly rendered service to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu by offering Him alms.

Jayapatākā Swami:  So, this is the advantage of the gṛhastha they can offer the prasāda to the sannyāsīs and the vaiṣṇava gṛhastha have this seva to offer to provide alms or prasāda to the sannyāsīs.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 12.94

aṣṭādaśāhāni sa tatra nītvā
vilokya taṁ devam atīva-harṣāt
pracakrame caṅkramaṇāya nātho
vimohayan kāṁścana viprayogaiḥ

Translation: Spending eighteen days there, Mahāprabhu saw Jagannātha in great joy and, bewildering the devotees with separation, prepared to leave.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 12.95

dṛṣṭvā jagannātha-mahāprabhuṁ taṁ
mahāprabhur gaura-sudhā-mayūkhaḥ
ādāya tasyaiva nideśam ādau
yayau pramodād diśi dakṣiṇasyām

Translation: After seeing the great Lord Jagannātha, Mahāprabhu, effulgent as gold nectar, took his permission and departed for the south in joy.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 12.96

gacchantam itthaṁ sa tu sārvabhaumaḥ
śokākulātmā karuṇaṁ babhāṣe
kathaṁ prabho mām bahu-duḥkha-dagdhaṁ
kṛtvā kuto vā prasabhaṁ prayāsi

Translation: Sārvabhauma, seeing the Lord depart, in lamentation spoke pitifully. “O Lord! Why are you leaving so quickly, making me burn in great sorrow?

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 12.97

kathaṁ mamābhūn na hi putra-śokaḥ
kathaṁ mamābhūn na hi deha-pātaḥ
vilokya yuṣmat pada-padma-yugaṁ soḍhuṁ
na śakto’smi bhavad-viyogam

Translation: “O Lord! Why do I not lament for a son?  Why do I not give up my body?  Having seen your lotus feet, I cannot tolerate separation from you.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 12.98

bata kva gantāsi pathā nu kena
kathaṁ pathaḥ kleśa-saho’tha bhāvī
yady eva gantāsi tadā kṛpālo
godāvarī-tīra-bhuvaṁ samīyāḥ

Translation: “Where are you going? By which path are you going? How can you endure the difficulties on the road? O merciful Lord! If you go, then travel by the bank of the Godāvarī River.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 12.99

tatrāsti kaścit paramo mahātmā
śrī-kṛṣṇa-pādāmbuja-matta-bhṛṅgaḥ
nopājihīthā viṣayīti rāmā-
nandaṁ bhavānanda-tanūja-ratnam

Translation: “At that place lives one great soul, a mad bee at the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, named Rāmānanda, the son of Bhāvānanda.  Do not reject him as a materialist.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  So, here Lord Caitanya is being recommended to see Rāmananda raya a great devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa. This is very important. Rāmananda raya lives near Rajahmundry of today on the banks of Godāvarī River.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.148

prabhura prakaṭa-līlāya ṣaḍ-bhuja mūrtira kathā jagate prakāśa karite niṣedha—

ye kichu dekhilā tumi prakāśa āmāra
saṅgopa karibā pāche jāne keha āra

Jayapatākā Swami: “Whatever you have seen of my manifestation (Nārāyaṇa, Kṛṣṇa ṣaḍ-bhuja), keep it a secret. Tell no one or talk about it later.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.149

yateka divasa muñi thākoṅ pṛthivīte
tāvat niṣedha kainu kāhāre kahite

Jayapatākā Swami: “As long as I stay in this world, for that long I forbid you to disclose to anyone.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.150

nityānandera prati bhakti ācaraṇera upadeśa—

āmāra dvitīya deha—nityānanda-candra
bhakti kari’ seviha tāṅhāra pada-dvandva

Jayapatākā Swami: Nityānandacandra is My second body. Serve His two lotus feet with pure devotion.

Śrī Gaurasundara said, “As long as I am present in this world, you should not inform anyone of this incident.” Mahāprabhu also instructed Sārvabhauma to accept Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.151

parama nigūḍha tiṅho āmāra vacane
āmi yāre jānāi sei se jāne tāne”

Jayapatākā Swami: “My declaration is supremely secret and deep. One can only know Him only when I reveal Him to that person.”

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: The word tāne means “Him.” Another reading for āmāra vacane (“I declare”) is keho nāhi jāne (“no one knows Him”).

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.152

nija aiśbaryasambaraṇa—

ei saba tattva sārvabhauma kahiyāra
hilena āpane aiśvarya samvariyā

Jayapatākā Swami: After speaking such truths to Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, Lord Caitanya concealed His personal opulence.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.153

parānandamaya sārbabhauma—

cini’ nija prabhu sārvabhauma mahāśaya
bāhya āra nāhi, haila parānanda-maya

Jayapatākā Swami: When Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya Mahāśaya recognized his Lord and Master, he lost external consciousness and he was filled with transcendental happiness.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.156

prabhura aharniśa kīrtana-vihāra o śrī-nāmarasapāna-līlā—

hena mate kari’ sārvabhaumere uddhāra
nīlācale kare prabhu kīrtana-vihāra

Jayapatākā Swami: After having delivered Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya in this way, Lord Caitanya began to  enjoy kīrtana pastimes in the holy land of Nīlācala.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.157

niravadhi nṛtya-gīta-ānanda-āveśe
rātri-dina nā jānena kṛṣṇa-prema-rase

Jayapatākā Swami: Constantly Lord Caitanya was absorbed in dancing and chanting in ecstasy. Lord Caitanya was so absorbed in the mellows of pure transcendental love for Kṛṣṇa that He did not know whether it was night or day.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.158

nīlācala-vāsī yata apūrva dekhiyā
sarva-loka `hari’ bale ḍākiyāḍākiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: When the residents of Nīlācala (Jagannātha Purī) saw these wonderful pastimes, all of the people they also began to chant the names of Hari. Hari bol! And they were calling out these transcendental names.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.159

“sacala jagannātha”—

ei ta’ `sacala jagannātha’ loke bale
hena nāhi ye prabhure dekhiyā nā bhol

Jayapatākā Swami: All the people would say, “Here is the moving Lord Jagannātha.” There was no one who saw Lord Caitanya who did not say that He was moving Jagannātha”,

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Lord Jagannātha, the Absolute Person appearing in wood, is stationary. Lord Gaurasundara is a moving Jagannātha. By directly seeing the Supreme Lord, everyone forgets about the material enjoyment of this mortal world.

Jayapatākā Swami:  In this material world, we are very much conditioned and we think that we are the body and we think that satisfying the senses is the goal of life. But when we see the Supreme Personality of Godhead, we want to serve Him and His transcendental senses and then we forget about material enjoyment and our spiritual bliss increases manifolds. So thus we forget the insignificant happiness of this mortal world.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.160

ye pathe yāyena cali’ śrī-gaurasundara
sei dike hari-dhvani śuni nirantara

Jayapatākā Swami: On whichever path or road Lord Śrī Gaurasundara would go, on that way people would constantly chant the holy name of Hari, and He could hear people would chant constantly the holy name of Hari.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.161

prabhura pada-dhūli-luṇṭhana—

yekhāne paḍaye prabhura caraṇa-yugala
se sthānera dhūli luṭa karaye sakala

Jayapatākā Swami: Wherever Lord Caitanya put His two lotus feet, at that place the people would plunder the dust from that place.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.162

sukṛtiśālīra gaurapada-dhūli-prāpti—

dhūli luṭi’ pāya mātra ye sukṛti-jana
tāhāra ānanda ati akathya kathana

Jayapatākā Swami: People who have great spiritual credit or sukṛiti were able to plunder the dust of Lord Caitanya’s lotus feet ,and the ecstasy they received is extremely beyond description.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Another reading for luṭi’ (“plunder”) is guṭi (“particles”).

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.163

śrī-gaura-vigraha-saundarya-mādhurī—

kibā se śrī-vigrahera saundarya anupāma
dekhitei sarva citta hare avirāma

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya s transcendental form was matchlessly beautiful! Simply by seeing Him, the hearts of everyone became captivated.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: The word anupāma means “matchless” or “incomparable.”

Another reading for kibā se śrī-vigrahera saundarya anupāma (“How sweet was the Lord’s matchless form!”) is ki śobhāśrī-vigrahera saundaryānupāma, which means the same.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.164

niravadhi śrī-ānanda-dhārāśrī-nayane
`hare kṛṣṇa’ nāma-mātra śuni śrī-vadane

Jayapatākā Swami:  From Lord Caitanya’s lotus eyes tears of transcendental ecstasy flowed constantly. From His lotus mouth we could only hear the Hare Krsna mahā-mantra.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: In his Śrī Caitanyāṣṭaka (5), Śrīpāda Rūpa Gosvāmī has stated:

hare kṛṣṇety uccaiḥ sphurita-rasano nāma-gaṇanā-
kṛta-granthi-śreṇī-subhaga-kaṭi-sūtrojjvala-karaḥ

“Śri Caitanya Mahāprabhu chants the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahāmantra in a loud voice. The holy name dances on His tongue as He counts the number of recitations with His effulgent hand.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  So we chant on japa beads, but Lord Caitanya would sometimes chant on beads and sometimes on His fingers. So He used the system of counting the mantras. Somehow or another we should count the number of rounds we chant of the Hare Krsna maha mantra, and meet our minimum obligation to our spiritual master.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.165

candana-mālāya paripūrṇa kalevara
matta-siṁha jini’ gati manthara sundara

Jayapatākā Swami: His transcendental body was filled with sandalwood and flower garlands from the deities. His slow pace of walking was so beautiful, it conquered that of an intoxicated lion.

In the Mahābhārata (Dāna-dharma 149) it is stated:

suvarṇa-varṇo hemāṅgo varāṅgaś candanāṅgadī—

“In His early pastimes He appears as a householder with a golden complexion. His limbs are beautiful, and His body, smeared with the pulp of sandalwood, seems like molten gold.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.166

pathe vicaraṇakāleo prabhura vāhyadaśālopa—

pathe caliteo īśvarera bāhya nāi
bhakti-rase viharena caitanya-gosāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya the Supreme Personality of Godhead, had no external consciousness even when He was walking on the road. Because Lord Caitanya Gosāi was blissfully enjoying the devotional mellows of pure devotional service.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.154

śrī-caitanya-guṇa-līlā-śravaṇera phala—

ye śunaye e saba caitanya-guṇa-grāma
se yāya saṁsāra tari’ śrī-caitanya-dhāma

Jayapatākā Swami: One who hears these transcendental characteristics of Lord Caitanya will go beyond the material world and achieve Lord Caitanya’s transcendental abode.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.155

parama nigūḍha e sakala kṛṣṇa-kathāi
hāra śravaṇe kṛṣṇa pāi ye sarvathā

Jayapatākā Swami: These topics about Lord Kṛṣṇa are most confidential. One who hears these topics about Lord Kṛṣṇa certainly attains to Lord Kṛṣṇa!

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 284-285

sārvabhauma-caitanya-saṁvāda-śravaṇe niṣkāma-bhakti lābha, uhā karma-kāṇḍīya phala-śruti-mātra nahe :—

ei mahāprabhura līlā—sārvabhauma-milana
ihā yei śraddhā kari’ karaye śravaṇa

jñāna-karma-pāśa haite haya vimocana
acire milaye tāṅre caitanya-caraṇa

Translation: If one hears with faith and love these pastimes concerning Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s meeting with Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, he very soon is freed from the net of speculation and fruitive activity and attains the shelter of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s lotus feet.

Jayapatākā Swami: So by hearing with faith the pastimes of Lord Caitanya bestowing His mercy on Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya and liberating Him from an impersonalist Māyāvādī to a pure devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa, certainly achieves the shelter of Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s lotus feet, and he is saved from the net of illusion and speculation and attachment to the impersonal philosophy.

Śrī Śrīmad Gaurāṅga-līlā-smaraṇa-maṅgala-stotram 42

Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhakura

bhāvāsvāda-prakaṭa-samaye sārvabhaumasya sevā
tasyānarthān prakṛti-vipulān nāśayām āsa sarvān
tasmād yasya prabala-kṛpayā vaiṣṇavo ‘bhūt sa cāpi
taṁ vedārtha-pracaraṇa-vidhau tattva-mūrtiṁ smarāmi

Translation: Sārvabhauma’s service when the Lord was tasting the ecstasy of love destroyed all unwanted material impurities in his heart, and by the Lord’s powerful mercy he became a Vaiṣṇava. I meditate on Lord Gaurāṅga, the form of preaching the Vedic truth.

Jayapatākā Swami:  So, we can see by the mercy of Lord Caitanya the hardhearted mental speculator and impersonalist can also have their heart melted. Lord Caitanya is the most merciful Lord and everyone should hear how merciful He is, and take shelter of His lotus feet, and thus they can achieve all success in spiritual life, even in this Kali-yuga.
