Introduction: Today we are continuing with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book, today’s chapter Part 2:

Becoming the Pearl Necklace for All Devotees, The Two Verses Declare the Name and Fame of Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.256

ślokadvayei sārvabhaumera mahimā vistāra:—

ei dui śloka—bhakta-kaṇṭhe ratna-hāra
sārvabhaumera kīrti ghoṣe ḍhakkā-vādyākāra

Translation: These two verses composed by Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya will always declare his name and fame as loudly as a pounding drum, for they have become pearl necklaces around the necks of all devotees.

Jayapatākā Swami:  Since Mukunda Dutta wrote these verses on the wall, although Lord Caitanya tore up the palm leaves all the devotees saw what was written and they glorified Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya for his appreciation of Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.257

gauragataprāṇa sārvabhauma:—

sārvabhauma hailā prabhura bhakta ekatāna
mahāprabhura sevā-vinā nāhi jāne āna

Translation: Indeed, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya became an unalloyed devotee of Caitanya Mahāprabhu; he did not know anything but the service of the Lord.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.12.19

iti nigaditaṁ sārvabhaumaṁ kareṇa
sarasam atijavena sneha-bhāvena dhṛtvā
nija-hṛdi vinidhāyāliṅganaṁ sa pracakre
vara-bhuja-yugalena śrī-patir bhakta-vaśyaḥ

Translation: After Sārvabhauma recited these rasa-imbued ślokas, that Lord of Śrī Lakṣmī, who is forever controlled by His bhakta’s love, at once affectionately took that bhakta’s hand in His and embraced him to His heart with His two beautiful arms.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.130

ei mata sārvabhauma śata śloka kari’
stuti kare caitanyera pāda-padma dhari’

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, composed one hundred verses as he glorified Lord Caitanya while holding His lotus feet.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.131

“patita tārite se tomāra avatāra
muñi-patitere prabhu, karaha uddhāra

Jayapatākā Swami: So Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya was praying to Lord Caitanya, “You have incarnated to deliver the fallen souls, I am a fallen soul O Lord Caitanya!, please deliver me”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.132

bandī kariyācha more aśeṣa bandhane
vidyā, dhane, kule—tomā jānimu kemane

Jayapatākā Swami: “You have tied me up with unlimited entanglements. How will I understand You? When I am absorbed in knowledge, wealth, family and high birth?”

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Mundane knowledge, perishable wealth, and high birth are the causes of various bondage. Being entangled by these, human beings cannot realize the eternal Absolute Truth. Being bereft of Śrī Gaurakṛṣṇa’s darśana, pseudo devotees and persons averse to devotional service cannot realize the importance of the Lord’s service. That is why, according to the consideration of the verse beginning janmaiśvarya-śruta-śrībhir –

janmaiśvarya-śruta-śrībhir
edhamāna-madaḥ pumān,
naivārhaty abhidhātuṁ vai
tvām akiñcana-gocaram,

“My Lord, Your Lordship can easily be approached, but only by those who are materially exhausted. One who is on the path of [material] progress, trying to improve himself with respectable parentage, great opulence, high education and bodily beauty, cannot approach You with sincere feeling.], such people become rebellious against Śrī Hari, Guru, and Vaiṣṇava rather than engage in chanting the names of the Supreme Lord. Their such inevitable degradation is due to mistakenly accepting the untruth as truth.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.133

ebe ei kṛpā kara, sarva-jīva-nātha
ahar-niśa citta mora rahuka tomā’ta

Jayapatākā Swami: “Have this mercy on me, O Lord of all living entities, bless me so that my mind may always remain fixed on Your lotus feet, throughout the day and night.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.134

acintya agamya prabhu, tomāra vihara
tumi nā jānā’le jānibāre śakti kāra

Jayapatākā Swami: “O Lord Caitanya, Your pastimes are inconceivable and unfathomable. No one can know them unless give the power to them.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.135

āpanei dāru-brahma-rūpe nīlācale
vasiyā āchaha bhojanera kutūhale

Jayapatākā Swami: “As Lord Jagannātha, the Absolute Truth appearing in wood, You reside in Nīlācala and sit there and relish palatable foodstuffs, blissfully!

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: On the pretext of eating palatable foodstuffs, the Absolute Truth resides in Nīlācala in the form of a Deity to distribute His remnants to His devotees.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.136

āpana prasāda kara, āpane bhojana
āpane āpanā dekhi’ karaha krandana

Jayapatākā Swami: “You make prasāda and You eat. When You see your transcendental form, You also cry.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.137

āpane āpanā dekhi’ hao mahā-matta
eteke ke bujhe prabhu, tomāra mahattva

Jayapatākā Swami: “You become extremely intoxicated by seeing Your own form. Who can understand the pastimes of Lord Caitanya, Your inconceivable glories?

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.138

āpane se āpanāre jāna tumi mātra
āra jāne ye jana tomāra kṛpā-pātra

Jayapatākā Swami: “You can only know Yourself. Only a person favored by You can also know You.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Śrī Hari, Guru, Vaiṣṇava alone can know Śrī Hari, Guru, Vaiṣṇava. Other people cannot recognize them, because they are not Hari, Guru, or Vaiṣṇava. Even the demigods are baffled in ascertaining the Absolute Truth.

Jayapatākā Swami: So these transcendental qualities of Lord Caitanya are really inconceivable, and unless one has His mercy, they are not able to understand His glories.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.139

muñi chāra tomāre vā jānimu kemane
yāte moha māne aja-bhava-deva-gaṇe”

Jayapatākā Swami: “I am so insignificant! How can I know understand You? Even the great demigods like Brahmā, Śiva and other devas are frustrated in their attempts to know You.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.140

ei mata aneka kariyā kākurvāda
stuti kare sārvabhauma pāiyā prasāda

Jayapatākā Swami: Having received the Lord Caitanya’s mercy, Sārvabhauma Bhattacarya offered prayers with great humility in this manner.

The word kākurvāda means “pathetic appeal” or “humble words.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.141

stava śravaṇe ṣaḍbhuja gaura-nārāyaṇera sārbabhaumera prati upadeśa ukti—

śuniyāṣaḍ-bhuja gauracandra nārāyaṇa
hāsi’ sārvabhauma-prati balilā vacana

Jayapatākā Swami: O Lord Gauracandra, Nārāyaṇa, having this six-handed form, hearing these offerings, these prayers, He smiled and He spoke to Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya as follows.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.142

“śuna sārvabhauma, tumi āmāra pārṣada
eteke dekhilā tumi e saba sampada

Jayapatākā Swami: “Listen, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, you are My eternal associate, and you have been able to see My opulences.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.143

tomāra nimitte mora ethā āgamana
aneka kariyā ācha mora ārādhana

Jayapatākā Swami: “For you I have come to this place, and you have worshipped Me profusely.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.144

bhaktira mahimā tumi yateka kahilāi
hāte āmāre baḍa santoṣa karilā

Jayapatākā Swami: “I have become very satisfied by hearing your explanations on the glories of devotional service.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.145

yateka kahilā tumi—saba satya kathā
tomāra mukhete kene āsibe anyathā

Jayapatākā Swami: “Whatever you have said is the truth. How can anything but the truth, come from your mouth?

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.146-147

sārvabhauma-śataka—

śata śloka kari’ tumi ye kaile stavana
ye jana karibe ihāśravaṇa-paṭhana

āmāte tāhāra bhakti haibe niścaya
`sārvabhauma-śataka’ ye hena kīrti raya

Translation: “Anyone who hears or recites the hundred verses you composed will certainly attain devotional service to Me. These verses will be renowned as Sārvabhauma-śataka.

Another reading for ye hena kīrti raya (“will be renowned as”) is bali loke yena kaya (“people will call them”).

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.258

śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya śacī-sūta guṇa-dhāma’
ei dhyāna, ei japa, laya ei nāma

Translation: The Bhaṭṭācārya always chanted the holy name of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, son of Mother Śacī and reservoir of all good qualities. Indeed, chanting the holy names became his meditation.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 6.271

gopīnāthācāryaḥ: deva madhyāhno jātaḥ | tad uttara-karaṇīyāya sajjībhavantu śrī-caraṇāḥ

Gopīnātha Ācārya: Lord, now it is midday. So Your Lordship should prepare Yourself to perform the afternoon duties.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 6.272

sarve: evam eva |

Everyone: So it is.

(iti niṣkrāntāḥ |)

(Thus everyone exit.)

Jayapatākā Swami:  So, by reading these hundred verses composed by Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, Lord Caitanya said that one will get devotion to Him. So, these verses of Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya are very important and all the devotees should wear these around their neck, and accept the great verses that he composed in glorification of Lord Caitanya.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Becoming the Pearl Necklace for All Devotees, The Two Verses Declare the Name and Fame of Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya
