Jayapataka Swami: If you do tarpana or pindi then you are supposed to change your sacred thread. So usually when you are at a cremation ground, you do some kind of ceremonies, especially like lighting the body or lighting the pyre. So just in case, one changes one’s sacred thread. When it is touching the body, definitely one should change one’s sacred thread. As far as whether one needs to do, just like seeing a dead body, I am not sure, I have to look into that. Different societies in India, have different customs. So if the people had told you that you should change your sacred thread, it is probably the custom that they follow. Whether that is touching the body, – actually sastric evidence is there for changing the brahmana thread, I have never heard before. But certainly you are doing the sradha or somewhat similar rituals then one should change one’s sacred thread.
