Question: Right now we are reading the second canto in Srimad Bhagavatam and of course there are so many questions about all the Maha Visnu and Visnu expansions. I have a question that I was wondering, was one, they are talking about, Mahavisnu lying down in the causal ocean, I was wondering what is the causal ocean? What is that? And also they talk about the ocean of milk, which Visnu is laying in the ocean of milk and where is the ocean of milk?

Jayapataka Swami: Milky way! Ha! Three Visnus, Mahavisnu expands into these in all the universes. And there is one Mahavisnu and each universe has one Garbodakasayi Visnu who lays in the Garbodaka ocean and from His navel comes the lotus on which Lord Brahma is born. And then each living entity, Ksirodakasayi Visnu enters into everybody’s heart, every atom, as the Supersoul. That third Visnu – Brahma, Visnu, and Mahesh – He is the one who maintains the universe and He is living in the middle of the Ksir samudra or ocean of milk. The devas they come up to the ocean of milk, they cannot enter in. Only the four Kumaras and some other souls can go there. So this is Visnu loka in the material world. So they chanted in order to tell some message to Lord Visnu and He was so happy the devas were chanting. He said that this month, this thithi, thithi means like this lunar day, anything performed on this thithi, this month, will be a hundred times more. The thithi was Ekadasi and the month was Kartik or Damodara. We just observed the Damodara month that was where by offering lamps we get some special benefit. So that is the Supersoul, Ksirodakasayi Visnu or Visnu from the ocean of milk. In the middle of the ocean of milk, He has a spiritual planet, He resides with Laksmi and His associates. Nanda, Jaya, Vijaya, Nanda, Sunanda, the different gates are there and so Jaya Vijaya are guarding, you cannot understand unless you get special permission! Ha! And now the scientists they have come with a theory that there are clusters of universes. That is actually what Mahavisnu creates, ananta koti brahmanda, unlimited millions of universes, which are like clusters of small bubbles. One universe over one universe. We see an unlimited sky. Maha Visnu is so large. He is so great that He creates unlimited times as many as such universes. And Lord Caitanya said that we move from one universe to the next. You only could go out of this universe after it is destroyed after the life of Brahma, and then you go back to the body of Mahavisnu if you don’t go back to the spiritual world. Then when He creates again, you go back to the material universes. So Lord Caitanya said, brahmanda brahmite kono bhagyavan jiva, guru Krsna prasade paye bhakti lata bija. That we wander from universe to universe, which means one day is a thousand yugas and one life of Brahma is a hundred years. We wander from universe to universe, means lifetimes of Brahma, we are born again and again and again. And then by good fortune we get a bona fide spiritual master and then we get the seed of bhakti and then we can achieve that pure bhakti and go back home back to Godhead. Srila Prabhupada ki jai!
