Question: In your book Vrndavane Bhajana, you mention that sankirtan does not only mean kirtan with kohl and kartal, it also means to spread the glories of the Holy Name through other means. So for us what is the way we do sankirtan, with the actual kirtan same and other parts of sankirtan?

Jayapataka Swami: Just like we have Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita class that is also sankirtan. We are glorifying the glories, the qualities, the pastimes of Lord Krsna. So, some programs where people are introduced to some of the Krsna consciousness philosophy may also be considered as a kind of kirtan. In Mayapur, in our main temple, Srila Prabhupada said, we should have nonstop kirtan. That means, bhajan, kirtan, arati, various types of kirtan should go on throughout the day. There are lectures speaking about Krsna, that is also kirtan. And when the lecture is over then someone chants, Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. So, that way we can always do kirtan by japa, by congregational chanting or by presentation of the philosophy. That way we see that men may be busy working during the day and they do some house programs, bhakti vrksa, or temple programs in the evening or during the weekends. But ladies, they can perform different kinds of kirtan throughout the day and visit different households and talk to the ladies and get them to include Krsna kirtan in their daily activities. Some change of weather!
